I have become drawn to figurative work.
It all started with enrolling in a class studying human anatomy for art.  It was a difficult class.  The ending of the class and my moving to Japan coincided.  There I found the best subject for practicing drawing the human body.  Sumo wrestlers.  ( I also remembered how much I enjoyed watching sumo matches!)
As I started to be more comfortable drawing figures, my eyes started to look for subjects in my daily life.  People sleeping on trains, women applying makeup in public, men gathered in a heated discussion, etc.  I would sneak in a quick sketch while creating an imaginary story about their life.
When I am inside my studio, I like to explore new materials, tools, and techniques.  The studio is my laboratory, and creating an exciting visual plane is what I am after.  My intention is to bring sketches and experiments together to create work that capture the essence of my subjects.  I wish to communicate honestly and to present my audience with a captivating visual surface.
I currently divide my time between Kauai, Hawaii and Zushi, Japan. You may find me sketching outside in either location.  Larger pieces are created indoors in my studio. In addition to private client and gallery sales, I regularly participate in juried art exhibitions. My work is collected in both the United States and Japan.  If you are interested in my art feel free to sign up for my newsletter, follow me on Instagram or reach out to me directly at https://www.tomokoouchiart.com/contact.
